Even though Hong Kong is still "technically" part of China, it feels like a completely different world. In some ways, it is. Traveling from Shanghai to Hong Kong requires a visit to customs and Chinese phone plans do not work in Hong Kong. Until 1997, Hong Kong was under British rule, and vestiges of the Brits can still be felt throughout HK today (European sockets, driving on the "other" side of the road, English). Our quick trip to Hong Kong during Golden Week was just the escape we needed to feel a little bit of western culture. Scroll down to see some of my favorite photos from the trip!
The Buildings
First of all, let's talk about the beauty of Hong Kong's skyline. Hong Kong has more skyscrapers than any city in the world. And unlike most cities, Hong Kong is surrounded by hills and mountains (it reminded me a little of Cape Town). The buildings are built right into the hillsides and break the city into tiers, with hills similar to San Francisco. Don't worry, there are escalators conveniently placed to get you from one city level to the next!

The Nightlife
Hong Kong has some fantastic night life. We stayed in Soho right near Lan Kwai Fong, one of the most famous streets on Hong Kong Island. Try Ce La Vie for happy hour drinks and a fantastic view (though prepare to pay a pretty penny) or The Iron Fairies for an awesome atmosphere, drinks, and live jazz.

Premiere Hiking
Did y'all know that Hong Kong has multiple amazing hiking trails? We spent a morning hiking Dragon's Back Ridge, just an hour from our place in Soho. There are dozens of other hikes, including multi-day treks, waterfall hikes, and beach hikes! Who knew?

Hong Kong Disneyland
You didn't think I would leave out the most magical place on earth, did you? Hong Kong Disneyland is definitely worth a visit. Like Shanghai Disneyland, it is full of magical touches and beautiful details.

Hong Kong is an incredible city, and we only saw a slice of it during our whirlwind three-day visit!
